Freelancers and DIY builders
Cheap and fast, but most stop at "the site looks nice." Booking flows, automation, and follow-ups usually are not in the package, and those are the parts that generate revenue.
AI-assisted independent builders
One experienced person with modern AI tooling ships in days what took teams weeks: site, assistant, bookings, reminders, dashboard. The catch: verify the receipts. Anyone can claim AI leverage; ask to see live production systems. I keep nine publicly viewable for exactly that reason.
How to tell them apart in one conversation
You do not need to audit anyone. Four questions sort the market quickly, because only one type of builder can answer all four without hedging.
- Show me three sites live right now that I can open on my phone.
- Who writes the copy, and is it included or extra?
- What is the fixed number and the fixed date, in writing?
- After launch, who do I message, and how fast do you reply?
The question of who is actually doing the work
In an agency the person who sold you the project is rarely the person building it, and the person building it is often the most junior on the team. That is not dishonest, it is how the margin works. With an independent builder the answer is trivially verifiable: the person replying is the person building. Ask it directly, and notice whether the answer is a name or a department.
When an agency is genuinely the right call
Multi-stakeholder brand work, a site with dozens of templates, procurement that requires a company with twenty staff, or a scope where you need design, motion, video and PR moving together. Common follow-up questions
Is an independent builder risky compared with an agency?
The real risk with either is the same: you cannot see the work before you pay. Mitigate it identically. Ask for live URLs, a fixed number in writing, and ownership of domain and code stated up front. An agency contract does not protect you from a bad build, it just makes the bad build take longer.
What if the independent builder disappears?
This is the fair objection, and the answer is ownership. If the domain is registered in your name, the code is handed to you and the site is on standard hosting, you can hand it to anyone. If a provider keeps the site on their own platform, you are exposed no matter how large they are.
Does using AI mean the work is generic?
It means the boring parts are faster, not that the thinking is skipped. The output to judge is the same as always: does the site load fast, say the right thing, and put a booking one tap away. Ask to see live sites and judge those, not the toolchain.
